15 years is probably the longest they’ll last. I’ve already had to replace the batteries in pretty much every one of my gameboy/gameboy color cartridges.
I cried when I lost my playthrough on Pokemon Crystal. :’c
Replacing the batteries isn’t that hard. You unscrew a nut, rip off a spot-welded tab on the battery, and very quickly solder (or tape) a new one in.

It happens but they’re really easy to replace. You lose save data, unfortunately. 
BUUUUUT, if you trade all your Pokemon to one game (Ex: Red) while replacing the battery in another (Ex: Blue), then trade them back, you can keep them all, AND go through the entire story again. :D
